Home / Telehealth

In light of current COVID-19 outbreak, it has never been more important to look after the mental health and wellbeing of our clients and the expert team at Psychology Consultants are 100% committed to doing this. During this time of isolation, Psychologists have taken to offering therapy via telehealth as we strive to protect you, ourselves and the community physically, whilst continuing to help people manage their emotional and psychological wellbeing. Telehealth has many benefits. Research has shown that it is an effective way to receive psychological and emotional help and that those who use it tend to be happy with it.

Our  practices at Newmarket and Morningside are still in operation (as at May 5 2020) with some Psychologists conducting face to face consultations whilst adhering to the strict hygiene recommendation of the World Health Organisation as well as the social distancing guidelines of the Australian Government. In addition to face to face consultations we are also conducting telehealth psychology appointments.

“The International Organisation for Standardisation defines Telehealth as the ‘use of telecommunication techniques for the purpose of providing telemedicine, medical education, and health education over a distance’, while drawing a distinction between this and telemedicine, which is defined as the ‘use of advanced telecommunication technologies to exchange health information and provide health care services across geographic, time, social and cultural barriers’”.

“Telehealth services use information and communications technologies (ICTs) to deliver health services and transmit health information over both long and short distances. It is about transmitting voice, data, images and information rather than moving care recipients, health professionals or educators. It encompasses diagnosis, treatment, preventive (educational) and curative aspects of healthcare services and typically involves care recipient(s), care providers or educators in the provision of these services directed to the care recipient”. Australian Department Of Health website.

Telehealth allows people to resume or take up new sessions with their Psychologist from the comfort of their home. Sessions will be conducted as they normally would but with the use of Skype or Zoom technology as to simulate a face to face session.

“To be honest, the prospect of offering psychology sessions through Telehealth did not sound appealing at the beginning. I didn’t believe that it would allow me and the person to form as significant a relationship and might not be useful. Reluctantly, I commenced Telehealth sessions due to the COVID19 pandemic. I have been really surprised by how well the sessions flow and how, with some simple tweaks, I am still able to deliver effective therapy strategies and tools. Even with new people we have been able to connect and work well together. I completely understand the hesitancy some people may feel about having their psychology sessions using Telehealth. My best advice would be to give it a go and try it out. Nothing ventured, nothing gained”.
